Overview

Margin Holds are used to protect the profitability of specific line items within an Estimate. This is useful when certain costs, such as subcontracted work, trucking, or key materials, need to keep a specific margin while the overall Estimate margin or total price is adjusted.

By using Margin Holds, you can preserve critical profit centers during negotiations or when making broader Estimate adjustments.

When to Use a Margin Hold

Use a Margin Hold when a specific cost category, such as Trucking, Subcontracting, or a key material, must keep its assigned margin while the overall Estimate margin or price changes.

Apply a Margin Hold

  1. Open the Estimate.
  2. Set the desired Margin (%) for the cost category you want to protect.
  3. Hover over the cost category header and open the three-dot menu.
  4. Select Add margin hold.
  5. Confirm that a lock icon appears beside the line item's Margin (%).

Repeat the process for any other line items whose margins should remain fixed.

A margin is only protected when the lock icon appears beside the line item's Margin (%).

Adjust the Overall Margin or Price

With Margin Holds active, you can change either the Total Margin (%) or the Total Price of the Estimate.

  • Held line item margins remain unchanged.
  • OneCrew recalculates the non-held line item margins and rates.
  • The overall Estimate updates to match the new target margin or total price.

After making the change, confirm that each held item still shows the lock icon and the expected Margin (%).

Remove a Margin Hold

  1. Open the three-dot menu for the held cost category.
  2. Select Remove margin hold.
  3. Confirm that the lock icon disappears.

Once the hold is removed, that line item's margin will adjust when the overall Estimate margin or price changes.

Troubleshooting

Margin Holds Option Not Visible

Confirm that Margin Holds are enabled in Admin Settings > Estimates.

Held Item Still Changes

Confirm that the lock icon is visible beside the line item's Margin (%). Reapply the hold if needed.

All Items Change

This means no Margin Holds are active. Apply holds before changing the Total Margin (%) or Total Price.
